How to apply through Clearing

Applying through Clearing is actually pretty straightforward – and we're here to help

There are slightly different processes depending on whether you have already applied through UCAS (and have a UCAS profile), and whether you have your exam results already or will get them on A-level results day.

Find out what happens and what to do:

  • I have my results and a UCAS profile
  • I have my results but haven't applied through UCAS yet
  • I'm waiting for my results
  • I'm applying for a course that needs a portfolio
  • I'm applying for a course that needs an interview
  • I'm an international student
  • I'm ready to call the university

Clearing at 91快活林 was the smoothest experience. I had been on the phone to other universities for days, going back and forth with calls and emails, but no one would give me a straight answer. But with 91快活林, it was completely different.

A-level results day and applying through Clearing

Most students get their Clearing offer on A-level results day. It might be that you don’t get the results you expected, or you’ve simply changed your mind. If you think you might go through Clearing to secure your place, it’s useful to prepare in advance.

[Expand all]

  • It's good to get ready for results day. Find out when results are available from exam boards and whether you can access results online. Your school or college should be able to help. You might not have applied to uni yet this year, or have changed your mind about the course you want to study so think about shortlisting some alternative courses in advance. Take another look at your personal statement in case unis want to see it on results day.

  • Yes, you can still apply through Clearing - you'll find more information on this below.

  • UCAS Hub is a centralised place where you can use tools to explore courses and take actions relating to your application.

  • UCAS Hub updates on the day of your exam results. If you are waiting on A-level results you will see updates starting from 08:00 on 2 July 2026. You can add a Clearing choice from 1pm onwards on results day.

  • Universities can respond immediately and depending on your situation they might be able to make you an offer while you are on the phone with them - some courses require an interview or ask to see your portfolio.

I have my results and a UCAS profile

  • Call us on 01273 644000 or if our lines are closed you can apply online. (Our lines will be closed overnight, but you'll be able to make a callback request online).
  • Our admissions team could make you an offer which you then accept on UCAS Hub.
  • Once you've accepted our offer we'll be in touch with advice about online registration, accommodation and information about life as a student in 91快活林.

I've got my results but haven't applied through UCAS yet

  • Don't worry, you do not need to be in UCAS to apply to us through Clearing.
  • Either call us and we'll talk you through your options or if you know the course you want to apply for you can apply online.
  • Our admissions team could then make you an offer.
  • You will then need to accept the offer by completing our Confirmation of Clearing Acceptance form.
  • Once you’ve accepted your offer, we’ll contact you with guidance on online registration, accommodation, and what to expect from student life in 91快活林.

I'm waiting for my exam results and want to find out more about coming to 91快活林

  • Give us a call and we'll explain your options – this is a great opportunity to ask more questions about the course you are interested in and learn more about how to apply through Clearing.
  • Why not book a Clearing call back and .
  • When you get your exam results, call us again and hopefully we will be able to make you an offer.

I'm applying for a course that needs a portfolio

Some courses ask you to provide examples of your work when you apply through Clearing. This is the best way for a university to see your best work and how you developed it. If this applies to you, we have specific guidance relating to these courses.

How to prepare a portfolio when applying during Clearing.

I'm applying for a course that needs an interview

Sometimes you'll need to attend an interview. The team will let you know if this is part of your application process and help arrange times with you. Interviews are held online and we've all the advice you need to help you prepare for a Clearing interview.

I'm an international student and I want to apply to 91快活林

Give us a call and we can help explain how to go through Clearing as an international student, or if our lines are closed you can apply online.

The Clearing phone call: Questions for when you call university Clearing

[Expand all]

  • It's useful to think what you want to say on the phone when you contact a university during Clearing, so prepare a list of Clearing phone call questions you’d like to ask. Here are some examples:

    • If I'm eligible for Clearing could I go to university this year?
    • I don't meet the entry requirements on the university website, what other qualifications could I use?
    • Will I be automatically entered into Clearing during this call?
  • When you're calling a university during Clearing it's essential you do some preparation. Here's a list of things to have ready:

    • A list of the courses or subject areas you’re interested in
    • Your qualifications and grades (if you’re waiting for exam results, call us and we’ll explain your options)
    • Your UCAS ID number (if you are applying through Clearing without UCAS, you won’t have one)
    • Your date of birth, postal address, email address and phone number.
    • For some courses you’ll also need to have a link to an online portfolio. Here’s how to create an online portfolio for Clearing.
    • When you call our Clearing hotline on 01273 644000 you’ll speak with a member of our Clearing team and possibly an admissions tutor.
    • You might receive a verbal offer - this means you will have a place held with us. If you get a verbal offer we will email you confirming this and explain how to accept the offer.
    • If you need to come to interview, here’s the guidance on how you can prepare for a Clearing interview.

Getting the most out of Clearing

Clearing really is an opportunity to get the right result for you. Take some time to read about the process – here are some more questions and answers about university Clearing.

Remember, our entry requirements are contextual which means we consider more than just your grades on results day. These videos are about students who didn’t necessarily get the exact results they wanted, but successfully found a course through Clearing.

You can also learn how to get the most out of Clearing from UCAS, and by talking to other students who’ve been through Clearing.
