Our degrees in biological and biomedical sciences

Undergraduate degrees

With an emphasis on applied learning, you’ll put theory in to practice using our specialist facilities and learn alongside leading researchers and professional scientists.

We offer BSc(Hons), MSci and foundation year routes for our undergraduate courses.

The MSci courses include an additional year of masters level study.

Our foundation years are a great way to prepare you for your degree if you don’t have the grades or specific subjects needed or if you’ve just changed your mind about which subject to follow.

Postgraduate degrees

We offer masters of research courses in biological sciences, biomedical science and related courses. Our MRes courses offer an advanced understanding of different approaches to research in your chosen area of specialism.

You’ll work on your project under the supervision of an academic member of staff and within one or more of our research groups, which include the Centre for Lifelong Health and the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices.

You can expect

Practical experience

Put your learning into practice through project work, field trips, hospital visits and case studies. You will use our specialist facilities that include electron, confocal and atomic force microscopes; a microbiology lab; a cell/tissue culture lab; and a genomics/proteomics facility.

Our biological sciences students conduct fieldwork in the local area and are offered the option of a field trip further afield in South Africa.

Placement opportunities prepare you for work in a range of scientific areas and postgraduate research.

Undertaking your placement in an accredited NHS training lab as a biomedical science student allows you to work towards the IBMS Certificate of Competence and the Registration Portfolio, which is key to becoming a registered biomedical scientist.
